I have not tried making my shake with just water or favorite beverage. I only make it in my blender. I have used the following recipe from "No Meat Athlete" as a guide for my shake, but i change things up quite a bit, maybe making a peanut butter and banana shake or switching my fruits. I don't use any sweeteners, I feel its sweet enough, but its your preference! Cheers and enjoy!
